Susan Martin, Music Reading Program Coordinator

Susan Martin has been the coordinator of the Chorus’s music reading program since January 2004. She grew up in Durham, England, where she began her music education by singing in a church choir for 11 years, studying piano and clarinet, and singing and playing in various music ensembles. She earned her bachelor-of-education degree (with honors) in music at the University of Liverpool, U.K., in 1989.

Susan has taught in schools both in England and Australia, working with children from pre-school to grade 6. She was music coordinator at a boys’ school in Sydney, Australia, where she authored a music-education program based on the Kodaly methodology. She has also conducted bands and choirs and directed various musical shows.

Susan has written several sets of curricula for the education dsepartment of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, specifically for the group’s school concerts. She worked with the Sydney Philharmonia, frequently performing in the world-renowned Sydney Opera House. Susan also appeared in the opening ceremonies for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Since arriving in Orange County, she has written curricula for the “Class Act” Concerts given by the Pacific Symphony Orchestra and has helped to rewrite, update and develop our own music reading program. In addition to her responsibilities as program coordinator, Susan teaches the Level 4 advanced class.
